The number of people sick from vaping continues to climb — and federal and state public health officials still don’t know what’s hurting them — as the FDA has launched a criminal probe to investigate samples.
As of earlier this week, there were 530 “confirmed and probable cases,” reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of people with a history of e-cigarette use hospitalized in 38 states and one territory, officials said Thursday during a media briefing. Missouri officials announced late Thursday that a man died earlier this week, bringing the total of reported deaths to eight, including one in Illinois.
“And we do expect others,” Dr. Anne Schuchat, CDC primary deputy director, said Thursday after releasing the latest number of cases and deaths during the news briefing.
