As the School District of the Chathams proceeds with a lawsuit against social media giants including Facebook, TikTok and YouTube, Superintendant Michael LaSusa released a statement Thursday explaining the reasons behind the district’s bold action.
The lawsuit, filed last week in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey, names the parent companies of Facebook and Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Google and YouTube as plaintiffs and stated their deceptive business practices have created a “public nuisance” that is harming students. Deceptive practices by those companies, the lawsuit alleges, are designed to “ruthlessly extract every dollar possible with callous disregard for the harm to mental health.”
In his statement, Lasusa said the district “has been reporting on the mental health crisis and challenges the district has faced for years, and believes social media is a substantial factor causing these challenges, especially for young people.”
