The Los Angeles Unified School District moved quickly to replace Alberto Carhvalo this week, naming acting superintendent and longtime employee Andrés Chait as the district’s permanent leader.

Chait, who began his K12 career as a kindergarten teacher at LAUSD, was serving as the district’s chief of school operations when he succeeded the suspended Carvalho, who resigned earlier this week. The FBI raided Carvalho’s home and office in February, reportedly in connection with the high-profile failure of a virtual assistant for students and families, and the collapse of the startup company that created the chatbot.

As acting superintendent, Chait led LAUSD through labor negotiations, budget planning and the completion of the school year for nearly 400,000 students. During his career, Chait has also served as an assistant principal, principal, local district superintendent and superintendent of Local District Northeast.
