Tenn. governor’s bill funding school resource officers advances with pushback

Gov. Bill Lee’s $30 million proposal to enhance school safety and add resource officers to K-12 campuses around the state has advanced in the House, though not without pushback from some Republican lawmakers.

The legislation, House Bill 947, is among Lee’s first-year priorities.

While Gov. Bill Haslam had already devoted $10 million annually toward the newly created school safety grant fund, Lee is asking for another $30 million investment — $10 million of which would also be recurring, in addition to a one-time $20 million deposit — to bring the fund to $40 million.
