These types of feelings among students have convinced leaders at Regional School Unit 57 in Maine to reopen school with a “soft landing” that’s focused on social-emotional learning as much as academics, says Erica Mazzeo, the director of curriculum, instruction and assessment.

“The great equalizer that is the threshold of the school building is removed and there’s no way to recreate that in thousands of individual homes,” Mazzeo said in a webinar Tuesday. “We are going to be addressing the known gaps but not assessing them because we know what gaps are.”
