International Schools in Three Countries Establish New Memberships with the Virtual High School
Schools in Senegal, China and Korea have joined more than 650 schools from around the world who have chosen (VHS Inc.), a Massachusetts-based non-profit organization, to provide their students with online and blended learning experiences in the upcoming academic year.
International School of Dakar in Senegal began a new membership with the VHS, with 23 students receiving access to VHS courses.TLC International School in China has also chosen to expand their local course offerings with a new membership, providing 30 students the opportunity to enroll in VHS courses. Additionally, Phileo International Academy in Korea joined the VHS collaborative with 23 course enrollments.
“This is the first year ISD has enrolled students in VHS and it has already been a great success” says Lorne Bird, Secondary School Principal at International School of Dakar. “We are able to provide much greater flexibility in scheduling and more importantly we are able to better differentiate student schedules to their interests and passions, as well as their abilities. The training and support offered from VHS is exceptional and this made our transition into this new program at ISD exceptionally smooth”.
Students at participating schools choose from a wide variety of VHS courses, as long as the student meets course prerequisites. Schools distribute their course enrollments to their students as they see fit, with some schools offering VHS online course enrollments to their entire student body, and others limiting enrollments to upper class students or students who have a particular course need.
The Virtual High School has a distinguished 22-year history of providing middle and high schools from 40 states and 33 countries with access to high-quality online and blended learning experiences. VHS also provides educators at local schools with graduate-level professional development and services.
Schools expand their course offerings by using the VHS catalog to supplement their local program of studies. The VHS catalog consists of more than 200 unique online courses, including 23 AP® offerings, innovative STEM programs, and a wide variety of unique electives. Of the members participating in 2016-2017 academic year, 92% continued their participation in the 2017-2018 school year, indicating strong educator and student satisfaction with the quality of instruction being delivered.
“We’ve helped develop standards for online learning quality, and we continue to shape the online education industry with our commitment to student success,” said Carol Ribeiro, President & CEO of VHS.“We are pleased that our new international schools, like our countless other partners around the world, value how the VHS program helps students develop critical thinking skills, explore college majors and career paths, and earn credits, all within a supportive, teacher-led, global classroom environment.”
