California the Latest State to Adopt Discovery Education’s Award-Winning Science Techbook for K-8 Classroom Use Statewide
Silver Spring, Md.(November 26, 2018)–Upon the recommendation of its Instructional Quality Commission, the California State Board of Education recently adopted Discovery Education’s Science Techbook for California NGSSfor use in K-8 classrooms statewide through its state adoption process. Discovery Education’s Techbooks are currently used by approximately 5.6 million students across all 50 states and Canada.
The California State Board of Education’s approval of the Discovery Education Science Techbook for California NGSS clears the way for school systems across the state to purchase and integrate these resources into classroom instruction. Discovery Education’s Techbooks support a comprehensive curriculum, can be integrated in any teaching environment, including one-to-one, one-to-many configurations, and when used in combination with print materials and hands-on kits, can create unique blended learning experiences. In addition, the Techbook series saves California teachers time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and performance-based assessments at their fingertips.
Discovery Education’s Science Techbook for California NGSS includes a comprehensive collection of digital assets, ancillary print materials, and hands-on kits that empower educators to transform K-8 science instruction. Built from the ground up for educators in the Golden State, the Science Techbook for California NGSS is available in both Spanish and English, includes model lessons and embedded CAST-aligned assessments, and features a vast array of interactive models, high-quality multimodal content, and accompanying hands-on labs and activities. In addition, Science Techbook resources approved by the California State Board of Education for grades 6-8 were custom built to the Preferred Integrated Learning Progression Course arrangement of standards developed by the California Science Expert Panel.
The Science Techbook for California NGSS’s rich, digital resources offer educators numerous opportunities to use anchor and investigative phenomena to activate student-driven investigations that fuel students’ natural curiosity and promote deeper learning. In addition, through model lessons and embedded Teacher Notes, the Science Techbook helps teachers ensure all three dimensions of learning are addressed and supports students as they utilize scientific practices, identify crosscutting connections and demonstrate an understanding of science through the application of critical thinking and disciplinary literacy skills.
The Science Techbook series also includes valuable STEM resources certified by the Global STEM Alliance. STEM Project Starters encourage students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems. In addition, the STEM In Action resources help students connect their work to STEM careers, which promotes a clearer understanding of how skills used in school can be applied to jobs “in the real world.”
The Science Techbook for California NGSS also promotes student equity by offering interactive resources and multimedia features that support students of different abilities and learning preferences. Through adjustable reading levels, Spanish/English options, read-aloud tools, highlighting and note taking features, and an interactive glossary, students will develop their scientific vocabulary as they build key literacy skills. Teachers can also accelerate or remediate instruction by utilizing embedded differentiation tools.
