On the move: Several superintendents elected to new posts

Several superintendents were also on the ballot on Election Day. See the incumbents and newcomers who won their races.

Several superintendents were also on the ballot on Election Day and a number of the elected leaders will be stepping into new posts. Here is who won their races:

  • Superintendent Rocky Hanna was re-elected to lead Leon County Schools (Florida), WXTL reported.
  • Longtime educator Denise Carlin was elected superintendent of the School District of Lee County (Florida), according to captivasanibel.com.
  • Nathan Fuller was elected superintendent of Colbert County Schools (Alabama), TimesDaily.com reported.
  • John Legg, a former state legislator and charter school official, was elected superintendent of Pasco County Schools (Florida), WUSF reported.
  • Shawn McDaniel was elected superintendent of Pickens County School District (Alabama), according to WVUA.
  • Jackie Pons, a former superintendent of Leon County Schools, was elected superintendent in Jefferson County (Florida), the Tallahassee Democrat reported.
  • Longtime educator Sharon Weldon was elected superintendent of Chambers County School District (Alabama), according to WTVM.

On the move: New hires

Superintendent Jerry D. Hollingsworth is moving from Waxahachie Independent School District, where he has served since 2021, to become the sole finalist to become the next leader of Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD. Hollingsworth has also been the superintendent of Bandera ISD and an administrator in Grapevine-Colleyville, Burleson and Carroll ISDs.

North Carolina’s Pitt County Schools promoted Steve M. Lassiter Jr.—who has served as the district’s interim superintendent and in other administrative positions—to its top spot. Lassiter, who has been the interim superintendent since August and is the district’s first Black superintendent, has also served Pitt County School as deputy superintendent, assistant superintendent for education programs and services, principal, assistant principal and teacher over the past 11 years.

Harnett County Schools, in the same state, has selected a lifelong employee, W. Brooks Matthews, as its next superintendent. Matthews has been a high school science teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal and athletic director.

The Wissahickon School District in Pennsylvania will promote Assistant Superintendent Mwenyewe Dawan to superintendent when its current leader, James Crisfield, retires at the end of the school year. During her 21 years in education, Dawan has specialized in curriculum and instruction design, classroom teaching, building and district leadership, and fiscal management.

In Missouri, Henry St. Pierre will become superintendent of the Fort Zumwalt School District in July. St. Pierre is the district’s deputy superintendent and has served as assistant superintendent and spearheaded the construction of an alternative school and an early learning center.
