New Mexico became the first state to cancel high school football for the 2020 season as Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham rolled back the state’s re-opening after an uptick on coronavirus cases.

New Mexico has had 14,251 COVID-19 cases and 533 deaths.

Gov. Grisham’s new order canceled the fall contact sports of football and soccer at least for the time being. Grisham said other fall sports would be canceled as well if school re-opening is delayed. She said contact sports may be allowed to begin seasons later in the school year pending the containing of COVID cases.
