Results from the 2015 Nation’s Report Card are in: Grade 12 student performance in math and reading dropped in comparison to 2013 results.
From 2013 to 2015, reading scores dipped from 288 to 287, out of 500 total. Math scores also went down a point, from 153 to 152, out of 300.
The lowest-performing students showed the biggest drop: Between 2013 and 2015, students at or below the 10th percentile in reading went down an average of 6 points—the largest drop in a two-year period since 1994. The high achievers, on the other hand—those at or above the 90th percentile—did significantly better in reading, gaining an average of two points while staying stagnant in math.
“The most recent results from the Nation’s Report Card in 12th grade show we still have a lot of work to do,” says Council of Chief State School Officers executive director Chris Minnich in a statement.
“We are seeing some encouraging signs as students across most demographics have performed better in math over time,” he says. Yet, it is clear we must continue to give our teachers and students the time and support they need to adjust to higher academic standards that will better prepare all kids for life after high school.”
