Police dog teams are familiar to all, and therapy dogs increasingly spend time in schools. Now, in some districts, security officers are patrolling their buildings with specially trained school dogs that can follow the sound and odor of gunfire and firearms to neutralize threats.
The state Senate approved a $19.7 billion early education and school funding proposal. The bill would increase state support for local school districts by $900 million over the next two years. Some administrators have raised concerns that it is insufficient given the growing size and needs of their student populations.
