Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller is meeting with Gov. Larry Hogan to ask him to release millions of dollars for projects the legislature amended into the state budget, including funds for school construction, Baltimore police reform and testing rape kits.
Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered a statewide grand jury investigation into how Broward County’s school district and other systems across the state have handled student safety and security. But the governor stopped short of suspending school board members or the district's embattled superintendent.
Lawmakers heard testimony on a bill to overhaul the state's current school discipline law. It would limit the length of out-of-school suspensions for theft, destruction, violence or possessing a firearm to 10 consecutive days. If students were suspended for longer, their school would be required to provide them with an assessment and services.
