According to The Nation’s Report Card, two-thirds of eighth-grade students do not read at grade level. Research shows that the most likely reason is either slow or inaccurate word recognition, as well as struggles with vocabulary, fluency, and many aspects of comprehension.
However, a growing body of evidence shows that struggling adolescent readers can improve if students receive direct, explicit, and systematic literacy instruction, and develop social and emotional skills such as self-awareness, self-management, empathy, good decision-making, and social awareness.
