Slideshow: $11M athletic facility upgrade in San Diego

Project's funding came from bond passed by voters in 2012 and state money

San Diego USD student athletes now play in a new football stadium, baseball field, track and other sports facilities as an $11 million improvement project was completed in April.

The project’s funding came from Proposition Z, San Diego USD’s general obligation bond passed by voters in 2012, as well as from the State Schools Facilities Funds. Construction began in winter 2014.

The district swapped the locations of the football stadium and the baseball field, so the stadium would be properly oriented. A new all-weather track and field were also installed.

Accessibility improvements, such as over 2,400 accessible bleachers on both the home and visitors’ sides of the football field and a press box with enclosed platform lift, will allow all students to benefit from the facilities.

The grass football field was replaced with synthetic turf for safer play, and new stadium lighting and sound systems will enhance the game-night experience. Updated ticket booths, restrooms and concession stands were also part of the project.
