“Today was a very good day for ARC,” said Jane Hileman, founder and CEO of American Reading Company, on the day Kareem E. Thomas accepted the offer for the position of Chief Financial Officer.

Thomas joins American Reading Company with more than 20 years of experience in the financial sector.  The transition to an educational reform organization is a significant career change for Thomas, but as a professional with a passion for building transformational partnerships and inspiring those around him to be balanced performers and leaders, ARC provides alignment with his professional and civic beliefs. “I used to leave work each day and didn’t feel that I was personally making an impact at the level I felt I should,” says Thomas. As a civic leader, Thomas proudly sits on the boards of The Urban Affairs Coalition where he is also the Co-Founder & Co-Chair of the Friends of the Coalition, OIC of Philadelphia, and Self, Inc., and is a former Board Member of the American Red Cross and Young Scholars Charter School. In the past three years, he has helped fundraise over $2MM for local organizations, as well as playing an integral role in the Read by 4th Campaign in Philadelphia.

“To have the opportunity to work for a company that plays a critical part in the learning and development of children and young adults is a dream come true.” Having been raised in a family of educators and community leaders, Thomas recognizes the importance of early literacy and fostering a culture of reading engagement for all students.

“You can literally travel the world and beyond while learning about yesterday, today, and tomorrow with a book. While my brother and I had access to books and the tools needed to learn, sadly this is not the case for every child in our region and country. Nor is every child excited to read.” says Thomas. “I’m eager to leverage my experience, connections, and passion for giving back, to support ARC’s mission of ensuring that every student is reading on or above grade level.”
