Shutdown forces schools to alter D.C. trip itineraries

A group of 27 students from the St. Agatha School in Upper Arlington left this morning for a weeklong eighth-grade trip to the nation’s capital. Middle schools from the South-Western, Dublin and Hilliard districts have visits coming weeks.

The St. Agatha group had planned to visit three of the Smithsonian museums, the National Gallery of Art and –– the highlight of the trip –– the U.S. Capitol. All will be closed to visitors until Congress agrees to reopen business.

Lawmakers are butting heads over a federal budget and its tie to new federal health-care laws. After failing to strike a deal last night, the government shut down many of its branches and furloughed employees across the country.
