Rockwood (Ore.) Schools, Portland Parks Partnering to Build Community Gardens

Two Centennial School District schools are partnering with Portland Parks and Recreation to bring community gardens to Rockwood, a high-poverty neighborhood whose residents have limited access to fresh food.

Centennial Learning Center, Oliver Elementary School and the parks department are in the planning stages to create gardens on the school campuses next summer. The gardens will be divided into 80 plots, each available to a resident or family to cultivate into vegetables.

“This (Rockwood) area is an asset and ready to have a community space,” said Julie Mack, the district’s Healthy Active Schools Program coordinator spearheading the program.
