Richmond School Board votes to close three schools

The schools and programs will be shuttered when this school year ends next week, and the students will be reassigned to other schools and buildings in the city.

The vote came nearly five hours into a work session, after a marathon public hearing and against the strongly worded protests of several audience members and the four School Board members in the minority.

“I believe you have an opportunity to do something historic here,” said Vice Chairman Donald Coleman, of the 7th District, asking his fellow board members to come together for the promise of good will in the city by keeping the schools open.

He suggested that to shutter the schools would decrease diversity at schools, segregating students.
