In choosing a top administrator from a school district in St. Louis as the next Poughkeepsie superintendent, the board hopes to boost student achievement.
The Poughkeepsie City School District Board of Education on Wednesday night appointed Nicole Williams superintendent — effective July 1.
Currently the senior deputy superintendent for academic services and chief academic officer for the St. Louis Public Schools, she succeeds Laval Wilson, who is retiring June 30 after being at the helm in Poughkeepsie since 2006.
School board President Ralph Coates said that in considering the candidates for the job, Williams seemed best-suited to lead the district.
“We were looking for someone who has urban experience, a very strong instructional leader and someone that shared our sense of urgency in raising student performance throughout the district,” he said.
