NYC to Open 78 New Schools in September

Education officials will cut the ribbon on 78 new city schools in September, bringing the number of public schools opened during the Bloomberg administration to 656 — a record for any New York mayor.

Mayor Bloomberg has made closing troubled schools and replacing them with new ones a longstanding signature of his education reforms of the past decade.

And now, with Bloomberg’s last school year as mayor beginning in September, he is patting himself on the back for creating better options for city students.

“Our administration has created a record number of schools and programs for our students — which have helped lead to record gains,” said Bloomberg.
