Belmont High School Principal Daniel Richards has a breathalyzer policy he plans to roll out this month. The policy will allow trained members of his administrative team to perform a breathalyzer test if a student is suspected of being intoxicated during a school event or during the school day.
He hopes this will be a first step in directly tackling the problem of adolescents drinking and bringing back the school dances without reduced hours. School dances have been cancelled in the past due to students drinking beforehand and showing up intoxicated.
A dance is planned for Feb. 9. In preparation for this event, Richards will be introducing the new policy to parents and students and even providing demonstrations of how the breathalyzer test works.
