La. Lawmaker Pushes School Plan

While Gov. Bobby Jindal’s education-reform plan awaits his signature to become law, a local legislator has submitted his own package of ideas for improving Louisiana’s schools.

Jindal’s agenda includes sweeping changes such as revised rules that make teacher tenure more difficult to achieve and maintain, an evaluation system for teachers that links pay to performance, an expansion of taxpayer-funded vouchers, new opportunities to create charter schools and upgrades to early-childhood education.

Meanwhile, Rep. Joe Harrison, R-Napoleonville, is pushing an agenda that would add new instruction requirements, decrease class sizes, rework funding formulas, implement operational changes and better involve parents in their children’s education.
