Jindal Education Bills Up for House Debate

A major part of Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's education overhaul package appeared headed for passage in the state House Thursday night, but opponents weren't giving up as debate continued late into the evening.

The complex bill could pay private school tuition for some students while creating new paths for creation of public charter schools that operate with broad autonomy from local boards.

Backers of the Jindal plan spent much of Thursday evening successfully fending off a series of amendments.
