Chicago Schools Set to Rehire Laid Off Teachers

More than 900 displaced, Chicago Public Schools tenured teachers, many who were black, will now have a chance at getting their old jobs back this fall.

A tentative deal the city reached Tuesday with the Chicago Teachers Union will make that possible, said Karen Lewis, president of the Chicago Teachers Union.

“This is movement in the right direction, but this does not settle the outstanding and mandatory issues in the contract,” said Lewis. “It is too bad this solution—which was actually presented months ago—was rejected out of hand.”
