California Elementary School Receives National Award

The Coalition for Community Schools will present an Award of Excellence to Harmon Johnson Elementary School on June 6 in a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Harmon Johnson was selected based on academic gains, access to health care for students and because of its strong parental support, according to a Twin Rivers Unified School District news release.

It will be one of three schools nationwide to receive the award from the education advocacy group.

Principal David Nevarez said 98 percent of the students at the school are living in poverty, and 65 percent are English language learners.
