A bill filed Tuesday by Sen. Mark Johnston, R-Sioux Falls, would bar schools from signing away exclusive rights to cover their sports teams.
“It would basically open up the ability of any media outlet to stream any activity with a school district, and provide probably more access to both traditional and nontraditional media in the coming years,” Johnston said. “Those activities should be accessible.”
School districts in Pierre and Sioux Falls have sparred with local media over this issue in recent years. Pierre’s exclusive contract with a radio station drew a lawsuit from another station.
