To make up for Becton's 10-day delayed opening due to construction, the official school calendar is now Sept. 18 through June 26, with a week added to June, half days of school for Martin Luther King and Presidents days, a half day on Dec. 20 and student day on Oct. 14, which was staff development day. Three snow days will remain, school officials said. Meanwhile, officials announced the project is already $1million over budget.

The Becton Board of Education approved the calendar, fielded questions and addressed criticism from more than two dozen parents who attended the Sept. 4 board of education meeting in Trailer 5.

Board member Larry Bongiovanni noted that construction would continue into January 2014, and construction officials confirmed that despite the delayed school opening, work is on schedule for the 24-month construction period completion. Students will be using trailers for science labs until then.

"It's not going to be done anytime soon, and we're looking at end of year or beginning of next year," Bongiovanni said.
