Rebecca Holcombe, head of Dartmouth College’s teacher training program, will replace Armando Vilaseca as Vermont’s next secretary of education, Gov. Peter Shumlin announced. She is the first new secretary of education to be appointed since legislation in 2012 changed the department’s organization.

Government should be run like a business. That mantra spills from the mouths of Republicans and Democrats a lot these days. And it's often used about education, as a way to justify spending cuts. If bloated school districts would just manage their money better, they wouldn't even feel the effects of budget cuts, so the thinking goes.

The county school board announced Gerri Martin as the new superintendent in a press release on Sept. 12. She will start on Tuesday, Oct. 1 after leaving her job as the current superintendent of McDowell County Schools.

The Interboro School Board voted to appoint Interim Superintendent Bernadette Reiley as the district’s permanent superintendent at a public meeting. Reiley had been serving on an interim basis since Jack Cleghorn resigned earlier this year.

The Troy, N.Y., school district has received a $2.8 million state P-Tech grant that it expects will help 300 students prepare for high-skill jobs over the next seven years. The P-Tech program connects local educational institutions with the state's regional economic development programs.
