Talk about the holistic route that Intel takes when it comes to implementing a new education model centered around technology.
Intel is passionate about education and we’ve been developing technology solutions to improve student success in both mature and emerging markets for decades. We not only develop technology solutions, but we also have developed frameworks to conduct workshops with our customers to assess their vision, challenges, goals, infrastructure requirements and individual needs. Every deployment is different and every student is different, and we need to think about all aspects to ensure that digital transformation is going to be deployed, managed, leveraged and sustained. We work with partners like HP to ensure that we bring not only the right technology solution, but also the right level of support to help our customers achieve and sustain success. One good example is the importance of professional development for educators. When you start to think about what’s possible today around digital learning and Intel technology, there are amazing advancements not only to traditional teaching and learning, but also new capabilities using data analytics, transformation to smart facilities and campuses, new devices using sensors, robots and drones. The possibilities to transform education are endless.
What’s the best thing parents can do in terms of contributing to student learning when it comes to technology?
The ideal scenario is for parents to be vested in helping to drive successful transformation around education with technology. There is an education that needs to take place for parents themselves first. It’s not just the teachers in the classroom using the technology, because students are now taking devices home. Parents need to be trained on how the technology works, how to support their children with educational tasks, whether it’s homework, specific software or apps, or doing research for writing a paper. I would also add that parents should understand how to ensure that their children are safe and secure when using technology. Safety and security for students is something we believe is very important.
How does Intel monitor and evaluate whether or not technology deployments are hitting benchmarks?
As an engineering-focused company, metrics are a part of everything we do. In any technology deployment, we work with our partners and education customers to measure success and to understand if the educator’s goals are being accomplished. For education deployments, it may be increased student attendance, graduation rates or decreased dropout rates, better online assessment scores, more personalized learning or individual student success, IT measurements like break/fix rates, platform manageability, deployment timelines, etc. There are many vectors that we can look at to measure these with our partners and our customers. We have always believed that true education transformation isn’t about dropping new and cool technology into the hands of teachers and students. The real magic happens when you work with the districts, teachers, parents, and students to use technology as a tool to help them overcome their challenges and meet their education goals.
